Vandaag was ik in Zuid-Afrika te gast bij Louis Bothma. Louis heeft een heel uitgebreide collectie parkieten en papegaaien, echt de moeite waard om te zien.
Een mutant bij de Rozeborst baard parkiet – Moustache Parakeet (Psittacula alexandri fasciata) bezorgt ons wel wat vragen en daarom zijn we op zoek naar kwekers die misschien ook deze mutatie in hun collectie hebben. De vogels worden geboren met rode ogen en deze ogen worden later bijna volledig donker, niet zo donker als een wildvorm, maar zeker niet rood. De meeste liefhebbers denken dat het bronze fallow kan zijn, maar ik heb mijn twijfels. De reductie van de eumelanine in de veren varieert tussen 95 en 75%, dit is ongebruikelijk voor bronze fallow. Persoonlijk denk ik dat dit wel eens recessief bont zou kunnen zijn. (Recessief bont kan ook de oogkleur beinvloeden). Opvallend is dat de slagpennen eerder geel dan wit zijn, iets wat we veel in recessief bont zien. Ander opvallend kenmerk: het verschil in man en pop bij Moustache Parakeet (Psittacula alexandri fasciata) is de kleur van de snavel. Bij de poppen is de bek zwart en bij de man rood gekeurd. tast ook dit kenmerk aan. Bij de pop wordt de snavel hoornkleurig (normaal bij een eumelaninereductie), maar bij de man wordt de rode snavelkleur ook gereduceert. Deze rode snavelkleur is het gevolg van psittacine en deze kleur kan normaliter niet aangetast worden door een eumelaninemutant, maar dit is wel ook een van de eigenschappen van recessief bont. Verdere kweekuitkomsten zouden ons kunnen helpen. Daarom is Louis op zoek naar kwekers die ook deze mutatie in hun collectie hebben. Wie kan helpen contacteert Louis via louisbothma@telkomsa.net
Today Ivisited Louis Bothma in South Africa. Louis has a large collection of parrots and parakeets realy worthwile to see.One mutation of the Moustaced Parakeet (Psittacula alexandri fasciata) caught my attention. This mutation raised some questions and we are looking for breeders with this mutation in their collection. These birds are born with red eyes that later turn almost completely dark but not as dark as the wild type, but definately not red. Most breeders think that they are bronze fallow, but I have my doubts. The reduction of the eumelanin vary between 95 and 75%, which is not in line with bronze fallow.Personally I think it might be a recessive pied. (BTW recessive pied can also affect the eye color) It is obvious that the flight feathers are rather yellow than white, something that is common in recessive pied. Another distinguishing feature between male and female of the moustached parakeet is the coulor of the beak. The male has a red beak and the female a black beak. This mutation also changes this color – the hen’s beak turned into horn-coloured and the red psittacine in the male’s beak is also reduced.The red beak colour is the result of psittacine and is not normally affected by eumalinin mutations. But this is again a characterist of the recessive pied mutant. So Louis is looking for breeders who also have this mutation in their collection.
