Type locality Pyrrhura roseifrons

Holotypes are important for the taxonomy of animals as they show us the original skins/animals taxonomists used for describing species and help us with are current research and see what the original animals looked like and where they were from. Pyrrhura roseifrons was described by George R. Gray in 1859 based on three animals collected on the upper Amazon river. Originally the type locality was described as R. Amazon, but in 1945 Gyldenstolpe this locality was changed to Upper river Jurua.
This is important as we need to type locality to understand the origin of the animals that led to the description of the species especially in a species where we know so little of and which can be so variable in its looks as Pyrrhura roseifrons. In a new paper Costa, Joseph and Silveira (2016) checked the validity of this change and come to the conclusion it is not valid and that the type locality should remain upper Rio Solimoes which is North of the Rio Jurua and which is in the North of the known range of the species.
